Serena Williams has stated that she fully supports former National Football League (NFL) player Colin Kaepernick for starting the protests in 2016 that are still going on even this season.
“I think every athlete, every human and definitely every African-American should be completely grateful and honored,” Williams told The Associated Press.
She also met two other former football players after her tennis match and said that “they really use their platform in ways that is really unfathomable. I feel like they obviously have great respect from a lot of their peers, especially other athletes, people that really are looking for social change.”
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” Kaepernick told the NFL Media in 2016.
“To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder,” he added.
President Donald Trump does not support the protests and has expressed his disappointment and the disrespect in the NFL players and even refused to watch any of the games.
