White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah did an interview with CNN’s John Berman on CNN, and he faced a wave of questions about why President Trump chose to nominate Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Berman cited unfounded reports that Trump had cut a deal with Kennedy, agreeing to nominate Kavanaugh if Kennedy chose to retire.

“Source familiar tells NBC that Justice Kennedy had been in negotiations with the Trump team for months over Kennedy’s replacement. Once Kennedy received assurances that it would be Kavanaugh (his former law clerk) Kennedy felt comfortable retiring – @LACaldwellDC & @frankthorp

However, Shah refused to go into detail about the president’s private conversation.

Still, Berman pressed: “You’re not ruling that out? You’re not ruling out those conversations took place?”

“I’m saying Justice Kennedy can speak for himself,” Shah responded. “The president spoke last night with clarity about why he chose judge Kavanaugh.”
