The DACA debate is continuing in Congress, especially as a new deadline to fund the government approaches on February 8th and DACA protection is set to expire in March.
Questions remain about whether a bipartisan deal will be reached to offer protection to so-called “Dreamers.” President Trump said he supporters a deal to protect DACA recipients if it includes funding for a border wall.
But thus far, Democrats have signaled opposition to supporting anything that includes such a physical barrier.
On Tuesday, when Kelly was asked about a possible extension of DACA, he said “I doubt very much” that it would be extended past March.
Kelly added that he was unsure “if this president has the authority to extend” believing the current protection stands on flimsy legal grounds.
However, Kelly also added that deporting “Dreamers” would not a be priority after the March deadline.
