Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), a staunch #NeverTrump politician who recently announced he not’s running for reelection, set off a firestorm among conservatives this week for his latest move against his own party.

Flake wrote a $100 check to Alabama Democrat Doug Jones, who running against Roy Moore in the special election. Then, Flake posted the check on Twitter.

“CALLING ALL PATRIOTS! Pro-amnesty, big gov’t Republican Senator @JeffFlake just donated to my pro-abortion, open borders, anti-gun liberal opponent. I’m asking for 100 grassroots conservatives to step up and reject the DC Establishment by donating HERE,” Moore himself tweeted, using Flake’s check as a rallying cry.

Flake has long been one of the most vocal critics of the Trump administration and used an emotional October speech to the Senate to lambast the president.

“We must never allow ourselves to lapse into thinking that is just the way things are now. If we simply become used to this condition…then heaven help us,” Flake said.

“Without fear of the consequences and without consideration of the rules of what is politically safe, we must stop pretending that the conduct of some in our executive branch are normal. They are not normal.”

Flake’s defiance prompted a response from the president last month.

“Sen. Jeff Flake(y), who is unelectable in the Great State of Arizona (quit race, anemic polls) was caught (purposely) on “mike” saying bad things about your favorite President. He’ll be a NO on tax cuts because his political career anyway is “toast,” President Trump tweeted.
